How to Write a Resume for Australia (2026)

Australians use "resume" and "CV" interchangeably. No photo, 2–3 pages is fine, and including referee details directly on the document is standard.

No Photo

Australian resumes never include a photo. Anti-discrimination laws are strong, and including a photo may count against you.

Length: 2–3 Pages

Two to three pages is standard in Australia. One page is considered too brief for anyone beyond entry-level. Include enough detail to demonstrate your impact at each role.

Referees

Australian resumes typically include 2–3 referees with full contact details (name, title, company, phone, email). "References available on request" is considered lazy. Get your referees’ permission first.

Key Competencies Section

Many Australian resumes include a "Key Competencies" or "Core Skills" section near the top — a list of 6–10 relevant skills before the work history. This helps with ATS keyword matching.

Visa Status

If you’re not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, mention your visa status and work rights clearly. Employers need to know immediately whether they can hire you.
